Tax Resources

General educational resources for clients and the community. These notes explain common forms in plain words. They are not tax advice and they are not a Givensology service. Everyday forms, in one line each. Form 1040: the main form for an individual income tax return. Schedule C: the form that reports profit or loss from a business you run on your own. Schedule SE: the form that figures the tax for Social Security and Medicare when you work for yourself. Form 8995: the form used to claim the qualified business income deduction. Form 8829: the form that figures expenses for the business use of your home. Form 8949: the form that reports sales and exchanges of capital assets. Credits worth knowing. Earned Income Tax Credit: a credit for workers with low to moderate income. Washington Working Families Tax Credit: a state credit for working families in Washington who qualify. Saver's Credit: a credit for saving for retirement. Education credits: credits that can help with the cost of college. Premium Tax Credit: a credit that can help pay for health insurance bought through the marketplace. Quarterly estimated tax basics for sole proprietors. When no employer withholds tax from your pay, you pay tax during the year instead of only at filing time. Many sole proprietors make four estimated payments a year. Keep good records of income and expenses, and estimate carefully so you are not caught short. Washington B&O basics for small businesses. Washington has a business and occupation tax. It is a tax on the gross income of a business, not on profit. The rules and rates can vary by the kind of business, so check the current guidance from the state before you rely on any summary here. Givensology does not prepare tax returns. Please consult a tax professional for your own situation.
